At West Ridge Animal Hospital, we use the most advance surgical techniques and technology available. All of our surgical patients are carefully assessed for anesthetic safety with comprehensive physical examinations, pre-operative blood testing, and heart function evaluation as indicated. Our surgical prep area, sterile surgical suite and surgery table are temperature controlled to keep patients warm throughout their procedure. All of our surgery patients have an IV catheter placed and are given fluids to maintain blood pressure, help clear anesthetic more rapidly from the body, and allow us access to the circulatory system should the patient require any immediate medication injections during the procedure. Our patients are monitored before, during, and after the procedure with state-of-the-art equipment which assesses heart rate, respiratory rate oxygen concentration, ECG tracing, blood pressure, and body temperature. Our patients are monitored and recovered by our highly trained technical nursing staff.

In addition to routine spay, neuter, and mass removal surgeries, we offer many more advanced surgical procedures at WRAH, including laparoscopy procedures, in which abdominal surgery (including spays, abdominal exploratories and biopsies) can be performed through 2-3 small incisions with a small camera and endoblade, allowing a much more rapid healing time; and endoscopy procedures, in which direct visual exam can be performed of the nasal cavity, oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, upper intestines, and bladder. Biopsies can be performed, and foreign objects and bladder stones can often be removed without the need for more invasive, traditional surgical methods.

In addition, we also routinely recommend having a Juvenile Pubic Symphsiodesis (JPS) procedure performed on large breed dogs that are spayed or neutered prior to the age of 15 – 20 weeks. This procedure has been shown to significantly lessen the degree or hip dysplasia present in large breeds by aiding in early fusion of the pubic bones, allowing a better fit of the femur and resulting in improved hip conformation. The JPS technique was developed and refined by a team of board certified surgeons and radiologists. We are committed to recommending this procedure in large breeds to slow or stop the progression of osteoarthritis in dogs with hip dysplasia.
